This picture is on the site elsewhere but as Anne took the time to send it I will include again. It shows Connelpark when the Smithfield building was a single storey structure, with the barbers pole clearly visible just beyond the bridge. The miners rows are present and the Gatehouse on the left at the crossing

Back in the late 50s or early 60s when Turnbull's the barbers and Lees Shoe Shop shared Trotters building. John Lees is closing up for the day

Another shot of the clearing of the Castle buildings. The wooden structure in the background was an Ex-Servicemen's Club built in 1919, which later was home to Halls before the factory and latterly the pigeon club
Turnbull's is now Loves baby shop, some of the Castle buildings have gone such as Sturrock's building but Henderson's, Radio Doctor's. Post Office and Golden Stairs are still present.

This is likely to be the solution to the traffic jams of 1963 caused by high snow fall on the Blackwood Brae. Thanks to Dan Jess for info
